Title IX and Sexual Violence on Campus: Best Practices for Ensuring a Safe Campus

Increased attention is being paid to safety on campus and the importance of making students aware of the risks associated with sexual assault and violence. To this end, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) extends to protect students from sexual harassment and sexual violence, such as rape, sexual battery, and sexual coercion. In recent years, the Department of Education has provided greater attention to this area, including issuing a detailed document in April 2014 entitled Questions and Answers on Title IX and Sexual Violence and issuing in April 2015 a "Dear Colleague Letter" addressing the roles and responsibilities of Title IX coordinators within schools. Because of this increased attention, colleges and universities must ensure their compliance with these laws and requirements.

Please join Richard Verstegen as he explains the need for colleges and universities to prevent sexual violence, to take interim measures in response to a complaint, to investigate and resolve complaints of sexual violence, and to protect victims of sexual violence.

Just a sampling of what this webinar will cover:

  • Understand the obligations to recognize and respond to incidents of sexual violence
  • Review elements of an investigation into allegations of sexual violence, including drafting complete and understandable investigation reports
  • Understand the various interim measures that a college or university may take during an investigation
  • Update your understanding of the other laws related to sexual violence, including the Clery Act and the Campus SaVE Act Amendments
  • Understand the First Amendment concerns that may arise during such Title IX matters and best practices on how to address such concerns
