Special Events on Postsecondary Campuses: A Legal Guide
From job fairs to artistic performances, art shows to technology expos, higher education institutions host a wide variety of special events. In this session, nationally-recognized school law attorney Erin D. Gilsbach will discuss the legal issues that schools need to consider as well as proactive measures that can be taken to ensure legal compliance and limit liability for such events. Throughout the planning process, a host of legal questions arise: What types of security measures should be put into place? Are special considerations necessary when inviting members of the public? What are the school’s responsibilities regarding equal access at special events? What measures should be taken prior to the event in order to protect the school from liability? This session is dedicated to discussing these issues and many more.
This webinar is designed to provide practical information and legal considerations for postsecondary institutions planning and/or hosting special events. Attorney Gilsbach will discuss the legal aspects of such topics as tort claims liability during events, age-related legal issues (for programs designed to include children under the age of 18), safety and security measures, non-discriminatory practices, and public access issues. She will also identify best practices regarding advance planning and protocols for school events to ensure legal compliance, including essential steps that can be taken to prevent and/or limit event-related liability. This is an essential training program for all school personnel involved in the planning and facilitation of special events on campus.
